My biggest concern; the issue that I most think about, is seasickness.
I've raced offshore before; RORC races to the Channell Islands, non-stop round Ireland and the Fastnet in 2007. On all of the races of I was really seasick. It didn't stop me doing my job (foredeck) entirely but it was very debilitating. I got plenty of support and understanding from the other crew. But throwing up whilst kneeling at the plunging bows, hanking on a headsail, is very inelegant and not really fair on ones shipmates.
These are the remedies I am packing for the ARC, the full armoury of wrist bands and drugs.
Everyone says that after three days it gets better. Comfort of a sort I guess.
nice blog!
ReplyDeleteHi Nick you might already know this but ginger is also supposed to be good for seasickness. The Northern Child looks tiny - I can't believe you're planning to cross the Atlantic in that (I must've been picturing a cruise ship haha). Good luck!
ReplyDeleteDon't worry about seasickness, after a couple of days out of sight of land psychosis will take care of it :-)
ReplyDeleteAnyway Nelson got seasick, although I think the boats he sailed on were a little larger....
Good luck, will follow the voyage with interest.
